Differentiated Spatial-Temporal Flood Vulnerability and Risk Assessment in Lowland Plains in Eastern Uganda

This study was conducted to map flood inundation areas along the Manafwa River, Eastern Uganda using HECRAS integrated with SWAT model. The mainly sought evaluate predictive capacity of by comparisons streamflow observations and derive, HECRAS, maps. Changes in Land-use/cover showed decrease forest wetlands, conversions into farmlands built-up from 1995 2017 have resulted increased annual surface runoff, sediment yield, water yield. Flood frequency analysis for 100-, 50-, 10-, 5-year return periods estimated peak flows 794, 738, 638, 510 m3/s, respectively, total inundated 129, 111, 101, 94 km2, respectively. Hazard classification extent indicated that commercial are highly vulnerable, subsistence moderately bushland, grassland, tropical high forest, woodland, wetland very low vulnerable flooding. Results demonstrated usefulness combined modeling systems predicting inundation, developed risk maps will enable policy makers mainstream hazard assessment planning development process mitigating hazards.
